Two Johns Hopkins researchers released a study last week concluding that the majority of adult cancers are attributed to random mutations when stem cells divide. That doesn’t surprise me a bit. Western medicine is hell bent on never connecting the human body to the mind or the soul. The research stops at the biologic level. If it can’t be explained in those terms, then it must be ‘random’. The Johns Hopkins conclusion appears to completely disregard the field of science called epigenetics, the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself. Instead of gene expression, Johns Hopkins concludes it is ‘bad luck’. These scientists can’t determine the reason so they conclude there IS no reason. Is that really the final answer?
Cancer is the Soul’s Wake Up Call
I am not a scientist and have no expertise in the field of cellular biology. I DO have some pretty impressive real world credentials related to cancer, getting it, thriving with it and understanding where, at least mine, came from. The Johns Hopkins study concludes that, in many instances, it is not the cancer patient’s fault that they got cancer. On the surface, that might make cancer patients feel better, but it totally and utterly disempowers them too. In my opinion, it is far more damaging to take away someone’s authority than it is to spare their ego.
The ego is not supportive of self-improvement. The ego, our gremlin self, likes to shield us from uncomfortable truths. While I am not in the market to make anybody feel the least bit guilty about their life circumstances, including my own, I am brave enough to stand up and say that our subconscious beliefs, that control 95% of our decisions, are manifested each and every moment in our bodies. I have included a link to Jini Patel Thompson’s talk that I could not recommend any higher. She healed herself of Crohn’s disease and now empowers others to do the same, and states in the talk that the body IS the subconscious. She means that whatever we are experiencing (disease, pain, or, hopefully, vibrant health) is simply the outward manifestation of our subconscious state of being. Our bodies are amazing bio feedback systems that clearly demonstrate for us whether we love, value and believe in our right to be happy or whether we are fighting a battle in some aspect of our lives. Additionally, when we are hiding something or not feeling capable of being authentically us, we treat our bodies badly. We eat crappy, processed food, maybe drink too much, take prescription drugs and rarely exercise. In essence, we numb ourselves to life. It’s certainly what I did.
Chris Wark, a guy I respect immensely who healed himself of stage III colon cancer in 2003, admittedly after surgery, but without chemotherapy, prepared a powerful rebuttal to the Johns Hopkins study. To me the most compelling part of Chris’s argument is that if bad luck is really the ‘X’ factor, why is the rate of cancer not exactly the same in all countries around the world? Chris states “13 African nations, plus Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikstan, Bangladesh, Thailand and Indonesia, have cancer rates that are between 57-66% lower than the U.S. Are they 57-66% luckier? The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, and Maldives have about 1/3 of the cancer rates of the U.S. Are they 66% luckier?” Most of these are third world countries. This is statistical evidence…something scientists are supposed to salivate over. How did they miss this or did they choose to ignore it?
“All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third it is accepted as self-evident.” -Arthur Schopenhauer
As with many health topics, such as gut health being integral to immune health, the holistic world will lead the way, utterly ridiculed, until enough people begin to accept it, at which point the conventional medical establishment will swoop in and act as if they made these discoveries. The Johns Hopkins study is the perfect backdrop for oncologists to continue to shoot down their patients’ inquiries into natural therapies, often condescendingly referred to as ‘quackery’. This is the perfect vehicle to perpetuate the illusion that experts know how to heal us but never, ever ourselves. This is the quintessential ‘pay no attention to the man behind the curtain’ move.
As Taylor Swift puts it “haters gonna hate”, but I continue to believe that fulfilled people, living their life purpose, typically don’t get cancer except when they are dealt a serious life blow such as the loss of a loved one, job or physical or other trauma. This might not be true in every case, but I believe it’s true for many. Even the CDC, not usually a champion of progressive healing in my book, states right on their website that “Intensive and prolonged stress can lead to a variety of short- and long-term negative health effects. It can disrupt early brain development and compromise functioning of the nervous and immune systems. In addition, childhood stress can lead to health problems later in life including alcoholism, depression, eating disorders, heart disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases.” Now before the hate mail starts rolling into my inbox, I am not suggesting that those with cancer were leading miserable lives. The cancer manifests simply to send a message from the subconscious that something in your life doesn’t sit very well with you. Where the cancer shows up is also not at all random and corresponds to what that area of the body functions as. I have discussed this in other blog posts in more detail if you’d like to delve deeper.
‘Spontaneous Remission’ or Soul Healing?
Did you know that conventional oncology has a term for patients who heal cancer without chemotherapy, radiation or surgery? They call it, I kid you not, ‘spontaneous remission’. Again, since it doesn’t fit in with their conventionally-held beliefs and they can’t understand why it has occurred, they label it a miracle of sorts.
There is a common thread that runs through many cancer stories. Stress. Dr. Kelly Turner, Ph.D. (Harvard and Berkley for any naysayers out there) released her New York Times Best Seller, “Radical Remission” last year. In it she reveals her conclusions of studying the ‘spontaneous remissions’ of a thousand+ individuals. These are patients who either never did the conventional treatments of chemo, radiation and surgery or did them and were told by their oncologists to get their affairs in order. She identified 9 key factors common to their healing. Of the 9, 6 deal with healing emotional and spiritual wounds. The others are a radical diet shift, natural supplements and taking control of your health (being your own advocate and not relying solely on the knowledge of experts). And this is only a small number of those that are recorded, not even touching the many, if anecdotal, testimonies I have read about patients checking in with their oncologists after they have healed non-conventionally to simply be told “I’m happy for you. Keep doing what you’re doing”. Western oncology does not investigate what these patients actually did to heal. Natural healing is far too threatening to the pharmaceutical monopoly and enormously profitable business model of cancer charities with major cancer centers perched as the crown jewels. In 2009, cancer drug revenue alone was $52.4 billion. What would happen to this system if the truth of natural healing and empowerment was actually widely known and accepted? Pretty sure some stock prices would plunge. The system would fall apart. The machine would never allow that to happen.
The truth is that all we need to heal is already inside of us. Our soul has the answers. We just need to truly listen to what is in our hearts to know the route. The answer is unique for all of us just as everyone has a unique cancer cocktail of toxic thoughts, feelings, environmental triggers, foods, stress and genetic predisposition that creates the perfect condition for cancer to thrive.
My goal is simple. I need to make my biome inhospitable to cancer. I keep my body pH slightly alkaline – the body’s preferred state. What keeps me there is mindful eating, light exercise (not the kind that feels like punishment), healing stress and, most importantly, living out my life purpose. I don’t know where my path will lead me, nobody does, but I know people with brain tumors who have healed naturally and that is certainly a lot better odds than conventional oncology gave me. Their plan was to give me costly chemotherapy, that they told me ‘might’ extend my life but couldn’t statistically prove that, and walk me to my death. No thanks.
It is nearly impossible to determine how many cancer patients die from the conventional treatments rather than cancer because no one will fund the study. My father was a perfectly fine functioning human until a routine chest x ray found his stage IV lung cancer. He continued to live normally, enjoying family and golf until chemotherapy started six weeks later, at which point he became a shell of himself. I won’t ever know for sure what killed him, but ponder this: a tumor is just a node in the body. It doesn’t kill by itself. If it blocks a major artery or other critical function it is life-threatening, but on its own, tucked into a lung or a breast or a brain – no problem. How many cancer patients are actually dying from complications of their treatments rather than their tumors?
A good friend of mine taught me a valuable lesson a couple months ago when he healed himself of prostate cancer by changing his mind. He did nothing else. He had been under a tremendous amount of stress around the time of diagnosis. It was biopsied 3 separate times, 2 of which were performed at renowned Massachusetts General Hospital. He had 4 confirmed cancer sites. He avoided treatments for over 2 years and dealt with my prodding him to change his diet, which he refused. When he finally was convinced to start working on his healing, the radiologists found it was gone. Mind over matter is the real deal. It can happen overnight or it can happen over a long period of time.
Speaking My Truth
The body, mind and soul are intimately connected. Just because we don’t physically see our mind or our soul doesn’t mean it isn’t there. You can’t see thoughts either but you know you have them, right? Choosing cancer treatments is a deeply personal decision. Although I see far more harm than value in conventional cancer treatments, I encourage all to follow what feels right in their hearts. Healing occurs when we get real, get authentic and release the baggage that we have been carrying. Diet alone may do it for some, as will conventional treatments sometimes – although the treatments often, statistically, lead to further cancer diagnoses down the road. To me though, no matter what route you choose, healing lasts when the person receives the message of cancer and embraces the change it was intended to inspire.
I see this study as a desperate attempt by the cancer establishment to retain the status quo. I have read that the majority of cancer patients do discuss natural therapies with their oncologists. Even Dana Farber has brought in reiki, massage and acupuncture to satisfy its clients’ increasing demands for them via a private grant. Natural healing is a threat to the entire system. Oncologists are not equipped to handle these questions and have no authority nor, in most cases, understanding of natural therapies. It’s almost like asking a car mechanic to bake you a cake. Medical schools, by and large, don’t teach natural therapies or the connection between the body, mind and soul. They teach biology, pharmaceutical intervention and surgery. They teach medical students how to silence symptoms, which I believe means silencing the messages. When you silence the message, the message will find another route. It will probably be louder and more difficult to ignore the next time unless you have made the changes the message was intended to inspire. The hard truth is that, however kind and well-intentioned, oncologists aren’t equipped to help a cancer patient more than what their pharmaceutical sales rep has sold them. Be brave enough to listen to the message from the soul. Embrace the changes that call to you. Heal fully: body, mind and soul.
As the story of the Wizard of Oz reminds us, the answers were inside of Dorothy and the gang the entire time. The Wizard was a fake.
