Adopting George Costanza’s Opposite Approach

George-costanzaGeorge Costanza, the ornery, self-centered, greedy character on Seinfeld has more to offer humanity in how NOT to behave. He is the archetype for what not to do. Perhaps the most glaring example of this was when he trampled young children to escape what he thought was an apartment fire. What a jerk!

In one epic episode though, he discovered something remarkable. He knew his life sucked. He had no job, he lived with his parents, and he had no girlfriend. He realized that every decision he had ever made was wrong so he decided to do the opposite of what he thought he should do. In his first attempt, he walked right up to a beautiful woman and said “my name is George, I am unemployed and I live with my parents”. He got a date. By the end of the episode, doing the opposite of every decision his mind led him to, he landed his dream job with the New York Yankees organization.

George Costanza inadvertently connected with his conscience which is the ultimate truth teller. He had built his life on lies, (Art Vandelay anyone?). He was set free and found success by telling the truth. Imagine that. It still didn’t make him a kind and compassionate person, but it did make him more successful.

How does your life look right now? Do things work out easily? If so, stop reading and get back to your life because you clearly don’t need the advice. If you feel stuck, however, if you feel a lot of stress, if you try to change and it never seems to work out, your mind might be sabotaging you.

Let go of your expectations. Let go of the way you think things ‘should’ work. Stop blaming other people for your lack of success. Don’t allow your mind to lie for you anymore. You are sabotaging yourself and you don’t even know it. If your mind is playing tricks on you, keeping you small and hidden, unplug yourself from it. Listen to your conscience instead. Your mind is the braggart full of hot air and little substance. Your conscience is the quiet genius. Your conscience is a knowing. It is the feeling ‘this is right’ or ‘this is wrong’. You always know what’s right, you just don’t always do it. Once you have rewired your internal guidance system, and given rightful authority where it belongs, the mind will catch on and start supporting the goals that are congruent with your highest interests.
